Motor Neurone Disease is one you may or may not have heard of. It is a devastating fatal progressive disease which attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. Usually affecting people between the ages of 40-60, although younger and older cases have been diagnosed. It eventually leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, difficulties with speech, swallowing, breathing and finally brain. Motor Neurone Disease has a life expectancy of two to five years, with only 30% of patients surviving beyond five years. The MND Association provide care and fund vital research and rely on donations, which is why I had to include them in my list of charities. It is a devastating condition, which effects the whole family. One person you may know is Professor Stephen Hawking who, after being diagnosed at the age of 21 defied the two years he was given to live, which it is believed he has survived so long due to the early age he developed the disease.
